Oral Fluid Collection

  • To collect oral fluid from the oral cavity, the collection pad is simply inserted under the for approximately 4-15 minutes or until the indicator turns blue.  In the case of rigor mortis, the collection pad is placed between the cheek and gum adjacent to the second and third molars for approximately 4-15 minutes or until the indicator turns blue.

  • The wand is then removed and inserted into the collection device (pad side immersed into the buffer) and the red cap is snapped onto the collection devise and shipped to our facility for analysis.

Helpful Tips

• Call the laboratory with any collection, shipping, report questions or concerns and for additional supplies
• Prior to collecting the sample, don Personal Protective Equipment.
• Confirm the donor or decedent’s identity by checking at least two (2) identifiers prior to collecting
a sample (e.g., name and date of birth), when applicable and label the sample container
• Be sure to hear the cap SNAP onto the transport tube to prevent sample leakage during shipping
• We do not recommend using the Quantisal device beyond its printed expiration date, call the
laboratory for further instructions
• If the pad tears during collection, retrieve the torn pad with sterile forceps or a gloved finger and insert the pad
into the transport tube. If the torn pad cannot be recovered, utilize a new collector to collect another sample
• If purge, debris, blood, or environmental contaminates are present in the mouth, utilize gloved fingers and
paper towel to wipe out the mouth prior to inserting the collector
• Document the chain-of-custody if any purge, debris, blood, or environmental contaminates were present prior
to collection
• Submit samples even when the collection pad appears to be dry
• If the decent is in rigor mortis, insert the pad between the cheek and the gums

Forensic Toxicology Testing

*Step 3. For Post-mortem Collections only When 1 mL (± 10%) of oral fluid has been collected, the volume adequacy indicator on the stem of the Quantisal collector turns blue. If the indicator does NOT turn the color blue after 15 minutes, remove the collector and continue with Step 4. Circle Yes or No on the Chain-ofCustody to document
